Ways To Cleanse Your Crystals

06/09/2021

If you rely heavily on your crystals, whether it be for spells, creating spaces, clearing/shifting or encouraging energies like I do, then this is for you. Here today we will be looking at some options for cleansing your stones of all you put them through. Wondering why this is important? Check out this post first;

Regularly cleansing and recharging your stones, I believe, is the only way to restore your crystal to its natural state. This act of care can also reinvigorate your own sense of purpose. Read on to learn about some of the most common clearing methods, how to align a crystal with your intention, and more.

Water

One method that can be used for a lot of hard stones (not soft or brittle) is holding them under RUNNING water. Water is said to neutralize any negative energy stored inside the stone and return it back to the earth. Although natural running water such as a stream is considered best, a fair percentage of today's magical community doesn't live in the middle of the forest as others may expect. In the case that you don't live by a stream, you can also rinse your stone under a tap in your house.

Another method of using water to cleanse your crystals refers to the salt in the water rather than the movement of it. If you happen to live near the ocean, then you should know I am envious, but you should absolutely consider collecting a bowl of fresh salt water. Otherwise, the rest of us could always mix a tablespoon of sea, rock, or table salt into a bowl of water. Make sure that your stone is completely submerged, and allow it to soak for a few hours to a few days' time.

Whatever the water source you have at your disposal, it is important to ensure that your stone is COMPLETELY submerged and that you pat dry when complete

Natural light

Personally I like to use ritual cleansing and charging that revolves around certain points within both solar and lunar cycles, however; it is totally okay to set your crystals out at any time! Set your stone out before nightfall and plan to bring it in before 11 a.m. This will allow your stone to bathe in the light of both the moon and sun.
I do have a warning for this method though, there are stones that have weaknesses in prolonged exposure to direct sunlight that may weather the stone's surface, and some stones that can be damaged by poor weather, so make sure you return for it in the morning.

If you have the right stones for the method and a safe place, I would encourage placing them directly on the earth.

Brown rice

A great method that as far as I am aware can be used for any stone! This method can be used to draw out negativity in a safe and contained setting; especially beneficial for protective stones, such as black tourmaline.
This method works by filling a bowl or container with dry brown rice and burying your stone beneath the grains. Remember to dispose of the rice immediately after the cleansing, as the rice is said to have absorbed the energy you are trying to eradicate.

Smoke

Another method that is great for all stones! All the hype around white sage, I'm sure most of you have learned all that it is good for, except it's not. Why? Simple, you don't believe in or participate in indigenous cultural practices. Sage is a sacred plant with a multitude of healing properties but it isn't the be all and end all.
Using smoke to cleanse your stone is said to clear inharmonious vibrations and restore its natural energy. You can pretty much do this with any herb. You'll need:

  • a fire-safe bowl
  • a lighter or matches
  • loose or bundled herbs of choice

If you're unable to use the smoke outdoors, make sure you're near an open window. This will allow the smoke and negative energy to disperse. When you're ready, ignite the tip of the bundle with the flame, transfer it to your non-dominant hand and firmly grasp your stone, moving it through the smoke.

Allow the smoke to envelop the stone for about 30 seconds. If it's been a while since your last cleansing (or you feel the stone is holding onto a lot) consider smudging for an additional 30 seconds.

Sound

Sound healing allows a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, bringing it into the same vibration as the tone. This can be accomplished using chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, or even a nice bell. It doesn't matter what key the sound is, so long as the sound emitted is loud enough for the vibration to fully encompass the stone. This method is ideal for collectors who have a large volume of crystals not easily inventoried or moved.

Using a larger stone

Large quartz clusters, amethyst geodes, and selenite slabs can be great tools for clearing negative energy off of smaller stones. By placing your stone directly inside or on top of any of these stones, it is thought that the larger stone's vibrations remove the inharmonious energies found in the resting stone

Using smaller stones

Carnelian, clear quartz, and hematite are also said to have an overall clearing effect. Because these stones are typically smaller, you may need to have more than one on hand to successfully clear other stones. Place the clearing stones into a small bowl, and set the stone you want to restore on top. Additionally the bowl you use could be made out of selenite... hey, there's no such thing as overkill.

Visualization

Although this is considered the safest way to clear stones, it can be intimidating for some. The more in tune you are with your sense of self, the easier it may be to redirect your energy to the stone you want to restore.

Take a few minutes to ground and center your energy, then pick up your stone and visualize your hands filling with white, radiant light. See this light surround the stone and feel it growing brighter in your hands. Envision the impurities flushing out of the stone, allowing the stone to shine brighter with renewed purpose. Continue this visualization until you feel a shift in the stone's energy.

Breath

One just for smaller stones; breath work can also be an effective cleansing method. To get started, hold the stone in your dominant hand. Focus on your intention for a moment and deeply inhale through your nostrils.
Bring the stone closer to your face and exhale short, forceful breaths through the nose and onto the stone to bring the stone to its highest vibration.
